North East Women and Girls Fund

Through the North East Women and Girls Fund we can help women to feel safe, supported and confident when confronted by abuse, discrimination and lack of opportunity.

Supporting women together for over twenty five years.

For over twenty five years, donors to the North East Women and Girls Fund have stood shoulder to shoulder with women in our communities. In this era of polarised views, an erosion of the advancements made for women and a heightened focus on the impact of policy decisions disproportionately affecting women and girls, the grassroots community projects supported by the Fund have never been needed more – helping to ensure that all women benefit as our society changes.

The North East Women and Girls Fund (originally called The Women’s Fund) was established in 1999 by Dame Margaret Barbour, with an initial donation of £250,000 from the Barbour Trust. Dame Margaret had a vision that the Fund would be a collective endeavour enabling local people to support women in our region. The good work supported by the Fund is needed more than ever and we’d welcome your support.  Since the Fund was established,  thousands of pounds have been donated through proceeds of events and monthly and one-off donations.

The Fund supports women-only projects by providing grants to groups throughout Tyne & Wear and Northumberland and the wider North East. The report below and case studies beneath are just some of the ways that we support grassroots local action. In addition, the film on the left-hand side summarises the fund’s aims and impact.

“Every week I actually really look forward to coming to Bright Futures, it’s amazing really, I can relax after the school day and just take a break but also develop my skills and take part in new things like rock climbing and cooking.”- Bright Futures

“WHiST has helped me believe I do have a voice and what I feel counts. It has helped me feel more positive about my future and have a better understanding of where to get help if I need it.”- Women’s Health in South Tyneside

“Given the current funding climate the grant we received from the Women’s Fund towards core costs has been invaluable. It is vital to SWC to have funding towards these costs to enable us to continue to provide a much needed and vital service to the women of Sunderland and the surrounding areas. We are able to provide an inclusive, safe, stimulating environment for both women and children to develop their confidence and skills” – Sunderland Women’s Centre

“I love to come to this group, if I didn’t eat here, I wouldn’t have a hot meal, I just eat sandwiches all the time at home. I like to come out on a Sunday and meet other women, have a chat and a bit of a laugh. I want to learn more about cooking and how I can eat more healthily on a budget” – Tyneside Women’s Health

“K joined The Millin Charity’s Together We Can Project in June 2023. K was long term unemployed, living alone and feeling isolated… Through taking part in this programme, K was able to improve her skills, confidence and make a plan for her next steps which included applying for employment. K is now working as a Catering Assistant and is feeling very proud of her achievements” – The Millin Charity
