Unlocking Expertise for Charities through Sector Support

At Community Foundation North East, empowering charities through practical, strategic support is central to our strategy. Through our Sector Support Programme, we connect organisations with professionals who offer their time and expertise, helping groups thrive beyond financial grant-making.

One such connection was made when Insiyah Khushnood, Development Director at Igloo Regeneration, joined the Foundation’s ‘Skills Match’ initiative. With over 20 years in the property industry, Insiyah was keen to give back to the community in a meaningful way. She recognised that many charities face complex property-related challenges, from understanding leases to navigating building maintenance, and that expert advice can save time, money and stress.

The Foundation’s Skills Match model is designed to be flexible and empowering. There’s no formal commitment or obligation, professionals contribute when they can, offering honest guidance rooted in lived experience.

Colette Harrison, Sector Support Manager at Community Foundation North East, explained:
“Sector Support at Community Foundation North East is the vital link between specialist pro bono guidance and organisations seeking this expertise, empowering charities to address challenges and pursue opportunities with confidence.

It is essential that the charity and individual have a mutually rewarding experience and Insiyah brilliantly explains the enjoyment that can be gained by providing specialist knowledge. It is a privilege to witness the positive impact of her guidance on the charities she has supported via Sector Support.”

Insiyah also highlighted the personal value of the experience by stepping away from day-to-day deliverables to apply her knowledge in a new, impactful setting. She encourages other professionals to get involved, meet people working in diverse areas, and use their expertise to support the third sector in fresh and meaningful ways.

“Through conversations with different organisations, I am part of a bigger change in a community’s ecosystem,” Insiyah shared. “But all you’re really doing is having a conversation like you would with a family member, giving honest advice and feedback and signposting where you can.”
