Sector Support: How Professional Expertise Supported Sustainable Growth

Community Foundation North East is working with David Beuzeval, Founder of ION Consulting, to support regional organsations in helping to build long-term resilience in the sector. When David Beuzeval founded ION Charity Consulting in 2013, his goal was to offer practical, hands-on support to charities and community organisations navigating complex governance and strategic challenges. Through the Community Foundation North East, David was introduced to two local organisations, TimbaDash and The Little Company of Calm, who were both looking to strengthen their foundations and plan for the future.

Colette Harrison, Sector Support Manager at Community Foundation North East, said:

“At Community Foundation North East know that financial support is only one part of what charities need to thrive. By connecting organisations with skilled professionals like David, we’re helping to build long-term resilience in the sector. It’s been fantastic to see how this partnership has supported both TimbaDash and The Little Company of Calm to grow and develop their work in the community.”

David’s work with TimbaDash meant the organisation underwent a significant structural change: transitioning from a Community Interest Company (CIC) to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), a move that better reflected their mission and the communities they serve.

Ally Hunter-Byron, a trustee at TimbaDash, said:

“David was fundamental in supporting us all at TimbaDash in the process of becoming a charity. His advice, guidance, and patience was outstanding. He thoroughly supported us through each stage of the process with care, alongside his wealth of experience and knowledge was priceless.”

Meanwhile, The Little Company of Calm partnered with ION to develop a comprehensive five-year business plan. This strategic roadmap is now guiding the organisation’s sustainable growth, enabling it to expand its mindful wellbeing services across Sunderland.

Andrew Carton, Co-Founder and Director of The Little Company of Calm, emphasised:

“We really valued the time with David as it allowed us to really examine our purpose, mission and why we do what we do. The process gave us the opportunity to re-assess our values, goals and focus on who our target audience is.”

Recognising the value of this professional support, both organisations went on to apply for funding through the Community Foundation’s Vital Community -Sector Support Fund. TimbaDash was awarded £2,965, and The Little Company of Calm received £2,156, enabling them to continue working with David and embed the changes they had begun.

David noted:

“Offering pro bono support through the Sector Support programme has been incredibly rewarding. It’s an impactful initiative that bridges the gap between professional expertise and grassroots. These organisations are doing amazing work, and with a bit of time and guidance, we can help them unlock an even greater impact. I’d encourage anyone with relevant skills to get involved, you really can make a difference.”

This collaboration highlights the Community Foundation’s commitment to strengthening the voluntary sector, not just through grants, but through connections, sharing expertise, and championing sustainable growth.

If you or your business would like to get involved in supporting the sector, we’d love to hear from you.
