Why we give: Pea Green Boat Fund

The Pea Green Boat Fund was established by anonymous donors in 2013 following receipt of a legacy. The fund has a broad remit, supporting grants relating to the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people, and refugees and asylum seekers. It gives grants to charities and voluntary organisations across Tyne & Wear and Northumberland.
One of the donors shared why they were compelled to give to the Community Foundation and what appealed to them about setting up a fund here.

“My parents held very liberal values and were generous with regular giving to a wide range of charities and always championed asylum seekers and refugees, particularly Vietnamese. So I think, were they still alive, they would have thoroughly approved of setting up such a fund.

“I discovered the existence of the Community Foundation by chance through an acquaintance. I was very impressed with the way that they helped my wife and I focus on our areas of interest and the flexibility and support the Foundation gave. Subsequently, our Fund Manager has very much respected our wish for anonymity, been very assiduous in researching and producing reports from the various organisations’ requests and has really understood our aims.

“The excellent research that our Fund Manager conducts to best match the funds that are available has showcased the immense variety of projects in the North East. Reading about their work has been truly humbling and inspiring, giving hope to so many.

“The Fund Manager has been very imaginative and flexible in managing the fund and was very helpful when we received an extra legacy. We particularly look forward to our annual meeting once a year over coffee in our garden. That personal connection is very important and valuable”.
