Mayor’s Opportunity Fund opens third round of funding to support older adults across the North East

Community Foundation North East is pleased to be supporting the delivery of Round Three of the Mayor’s Opportunity Fund, launched by Mayor Kim McGuinness to help improve the lives of older people across our region.

The latest round of the fund will make grants between £5,000 to £10,000 available to community groups working with residents aged 65 and over, responding to growing challenges including poverty, social isolation and widening inequalities.

Applications opened on Monday 19 January, with funding aimed at backing the local organisations who know their communities best and are already making a difference to older people’s lives.

Mayor Kim McGuinness said the fund recognises the urgent pressures facing older residents across the North East, from rising living costs to loneliness and lack of support, and is designed to strengthen community-led solutions.

Mayor Kim McGuinness said the fund recognises the urgent pressures facing older residents across the North East, from rising living costs to loneliness and lack of support, and is designed to strengthen community-led solutions.

The need is significant. The North East has some of the highest levels of older adults living in poverty in the country, with 19% of older people living in relative poverty, and a sharp rise in over-65 poverty over the past decade. Loneliness among older adults remains higher than the national average, with serious impacts on both mental and physical health.

Round Three of the fund is designed both to strengthen existing community support and to encourage new ideas that help older adults stay active, connected and independent for longer. Projects may focus on issues such as digital inclusion, fuel poverty, transport, mental health, dementia support, and improving quality of life at the end of life.

Community Foundation North East is delighted to continue working in partnership to ensure this funding reaches the grassroots groups making a positive difference for older people across the North East.
