Supporting Summer playschemes to address school holiday hunger

About The Playschemes Fund

The Playschemes Fund supports activities for children and young people who would otherwise be excluded from summer holiday playschemes, across Tyne & Wear and Northumberland. Grants are available for playschemes that cannot access government funding, as well as to enable government-funded schemes to extend provision to individuals that might otherwise be excluded.

Preference will be given to applications from areas of above-average deprivation that offer (preferably) nutritious food and provide a range of regular educational and leisure/physical opportunities.

Important development for 2025:

Applications will only be considered from playschemes that deliver the ‘4x4x4’ model as a minimum (i.e. the provision of sessions for AT LEAST four hours per day, for four days per week, across four weeks) for EVERY participant. This is to ensure that all beneficiaries are provided with sufficient support to address holiday hunger and reduce the likelihood of falling behind their peers by the time of the start of the new school year in September.

Please provide full information about the duration of delivery (e.g. 9am-5pm for five days per week across six weeks), as well as the type of activities and trips that have been planned and the meals/snacks to be provided.

Please set out your three SMART objectives as follows:
1. The TOTAL number of children and young people that will benefit and the number of children and young people that will attend PER DAY.
2. The TOTAL number of days that sessions will be held and the TOTAL approximate number of hours of activities that will be provided.
3. The TOTAL number of meals that will be provided.

We are keen to learn about the impact of the activities and food funded by the Playschemes Fund alone, so please separate your budget and objectives from other sources of funding (such as the Holiday Activity Fund).

For monitoring purposes, we would like to gather pictures and hear from participants and their parents/carers about their experiences of participating.
