During our recent Environment Conference, attendees shared a wide range of practical commitments focused on creating a greener and fairer future for the region.
The conference brought together funders, charities, businesses, community organisations and young people to explore how environmental action can be supported at both a grassroots and strategic level. Alongside panel discussions and speaker sessions, attendees also took part in “On The Table” workshop, where they were invited to identify actions they could take individually and within their organisations.
A strong theme throughout the commitments was collaboration. Many delegates highlighted the importance of connecting organisations, amplifying community voices, and working together to create lasting environmental impact.
Commitments made by organisations included:
- Improving community buildings.
- Installing solar panels.
- Encouraging greener travel through cycle facilities and EV charging points.
- Reducing energy use.
- Creating green committees to embed environmental thinking into day-to-day work.
Delegates also discussed the importance of sharing knowledge and learning, with several organisations committing to showcase case studies, celebrate community action, and help make environmental change feel more accessible and achievable.
Funding and investment were another key focus. Conversations explored how funders can better connect with grassroots organisations and support more environmentally focused projects across the North East.
Alongside organisational commitments, attendees also reflected on the role individuals can play through everyday actions. Commitments included reducing food waste, composting and recycling more, improving home energy efficiency, using public transport more often, cycling instead of driving, and getting involved in local community projects.
The commitments demonstrated that environmental action could take many forms, from strategic investment and partnership working to small practical changes made consistently over time.
John Hollingsworth, Chief Philanthropy and Development Officer at Community Foundation North East, said:
“These commitments show the real appetite that exists across our region to turn conversations into action. What matters now is continuing that momentum, following through on the ideas shared at the conference and working together to create meaningful, long-term change for our communities and environment.”
Together, these actions have the potential to strengthen communities, create greener spaces and support long-term environmental change across the North East. We are inviting all attendees to share their progress and update us on their commitments. Please update us on how your organisation is working towards the commitments you made at the environment conference workshop by contacting Ross Wilson using the form below, or email general@communityfoundation.org.uk
