Community Foundation North East is partnering with James Carss, Chief Executive of Castle Peak Group, to help charities across the region build more inclusive and representative boards. James supports organisations to embed diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) into their governance, ensuring boards reflect the communities they serve.
James brings a wealth of experience in organisational development and a deep commitment to inclusive leadership. His work challenges the idea that diversity is a tick-box exercise, instead positioning it as a strategic strength, giving integrity to decision-making.
Colette Harrison, Sector Support Manager at Community Foundation North East, said: “A diverse board is essential for effective decision-making and diversity can mean something different for each organisation, to be representative of the communities served. James brings this best practice to life, through his extensive experience and generosity of time and expertise”.

Through Sector Support at Community Foundation North East, James is connecting with charities that are ready to take action. His support includes one-to-one advice, workshops, and tailored guidance to help boards become more inclusive and effective. Via Sector Support, James has been guest speaker at the North East Chairing Network to share his insights on unconscious bias in trustee recruitment.
James Carss, Chief Executive at Castle Peak Group, noted: “Community Foundation North East is a brilliant connector. It brings together people who want to make a difference with the organisations that need support. I’m proud to be part of that”.
Castle Peak Group has produced a practical guide for charities, outlining how they can take meaningful steps to diversify their boards. Castle Peak Group’s report, available here, includes guidance on inclusive recruitment, unconscious bias and creating a culture where all voices are heard.
