‘Here Be Dragons’ Takes Flight
In the first round of the Mayor’s Opportunity Fund, Community Foundation North East awarded £9,600 to Unfolding Theatre to support ‘Here Be Dragons’, a community-driven theatre production co-created with children and families from Byker, Cowgate, Felling, Thornley, and the North East deaf community.
Developed through 30 drama workshops involving 110 children, the production celebrates the strength of diverse communities, exploring themes of belonging and resilience. Performances are underway and take place in non-traditional venues such as schools and community centres, reaching over 1,000 people across the region.
Nils Stronach, Head of Grant Practice and Programmes at Community Foundation North East, said:
“Here Be Dragons is a rich example of how theatre can explore different perspectives rooted in belonging. It’s an inclusive experience that brings communities together and gives children and families a chance to see themselves reflected in the stories they share.”

The project is particularly timely. Conceived in 2023, its urgency grew in 2024 when Unfolding Theatre had to cancel a youth activity due to risks posed by a far-right protest. In response, ‘Here Be Dragons’ creates safe, welcoming spaces that celebrate diversity and encourage greater understanding.
Victoria Sanderson, Director of Partnerships & Audiences at Unfolding Theatre, added:
“Thanks to the Mayor’s Opportunity Fund, Here Be Dragons has already reached hundreds of people, including BSL-interpreted performances and creative workshops. This autumn, we’re excited to bring the show to even more communities as part of IncludFEST.”
With 15 years of experience working with historically excluded communities, Unfolding Theatre is uniquely placed to deliver this impactful programme. The funding will help deepen community connections, amplify hope and bring high-quality cultural experiences directly to the heart of local neighbourhoods.
