Carroll Savage Fund

Leaving a legacy gift to the Community Foundation

Using a fund to support individual and communities in rural Northumberland

As a fitting legacy, Jane Carroll used a gift in her Will to establish a fund to support individuals and community groups in her beloved rural Northumberland.

Jane was born and raised in Northumberland. She worked as a freelance editor and translator into Italian, having spent several years living and working in Italy before moving to London to work. At the earliest opportunity she moved back north to Gosforth where she lived for many years and continued to work up until her death in 2017. Among the many projects she worked on were reports for the European Union, UNICEF, Save the Children and Christian Aid.

Jane was the youngest of three sisters; being the only one not to marry or have children she remained especially close to her mother, Muriel (nee Savage). Muriel and her husband Bill had lived in Gosforth, where Muriel was a ballet and music teacher. Later they moved to Catton, near Hexham, and ultimately Longhoughton where they are buried.

Jane was a great lover of all things Northumbrian. She was an active member of the Northumberland and Newcastle Society in Jesmond, the Lit & Phil in Newcastle, the Sage Gateshead (now Glasshouse Centre for Music), the Baltic Arts Centre, the Northumberland Wildlife Trust, and Amnesty International. She campaigned very vocally for multiple local issues based around the natural environment, animal welfare and the heritage of Northumberland. She loved music and sang with the Hexham Abbey Festival Chorus.

In Jane’s Will she was also keen to create a lasting legacy for the benefit of local groups; accordingly, she established the Carroll Savage Fund, a donor advised endowment fund at the Community Foundation. The purpose of the fund is to “support individuals and community groups in rural Northumberland with small grants that will make a difference”.

By awarding grants to rural communities and small groups/individuals in Northumberland, covering a wide range of cultural, recreational and environmental projects, she would be giving support and encouragement to those actively engaged in making a difference to their lives.

The Community Foundation’s knowledge of the region and the patchwork of local charities and voluntary organisations that support rural communities, ensured that the Carroll Savage Fund makes impactful grants to rural communities close to Jane’s heart.
