Community Foundation North East to ‘bring opportunity home’

Community Foundation North East brought together philanthropists, businesses and philanthropic foundations with MPs, Lords and civil servants at the Houses of Parliament this week and called on them to help ‘bring opportunity home’ to communities across the region.

The event, hosted by Catherine McKinnell MP and supported by Newcastle Building Society, celebrated North East England’s rich tradition of homegrown philanthropy and additionally encouraged national leaders to back Community Foundation North East’s mission to grow philanthropy in the region.

Catherine McKinnell MP, who represents Newcastle North, said:

“It was a real pleasure to host and celebrate the Community Foundation North East in Parliament. As their local MP, I am proud of the work that they do across our region – making the case for investing in our local communities.

“Our region is known for its warm heart and strong community spirit. The Community Foundation is a shining example of this, giving grants to community groups and making sure that philanthropy goes to the places which need it the most.”

There was also an appeal made to the region’s expat communities to rally behind good causes in the region. The North East Roots Fund at Community Foundation North East is designed for those with a connection to the region to give back even when they are no longer resident here. The Foundation aims to build an unrivalled North East Roots Network from around the world directing money, time and expertise towards causes in the North East. Many of the first supporters of the fund were at parliament to share why they support the fund and why they are encouraging others to join them.

Speaking at the event, Rob Williamson, Chief Executive of Community Foundation North East, emphasised the region’s deep-rooted culture of generosity and the urgent need to build on it:

“People from the North East have a deep sense of community and a strong tradition of stepping up. But today’s challenges demand more from philanthropy,

“By encouraging the giving of money, time, and expertise, we can bring not just investment, but real power, back to the region. The North East has the ambition, the leadership, and the spirit. With the right support and partnerships, philanthropy can help build a fairer, more prosperous future for all.”

To continue its engagement with those who are passionate about the region, the Foundation will host the first ever North East Roots Homecoming in December 2025. Homecoming will be a landmark celebration of the region’s global community, recognising champions of the region and spotlighting stories of individuals and organisations that are creating lasting opportunity.

Community Foundation North East is also working to shape national policy on philanthropy, advocating for the region to be front of mind as government, councils, and mayors increasingly recognise the role of giving in tackling regional challenges.
