Back on the Map Builds Pathways to Opportunity Through North East Roots Funding

Back on the Map (BotM), a resident-led charity and social enterprise in Hendon, Sunderland, is continuing to create opportunities for young people following support from Community Foundation North East’s North East Roots Fund.

In December 2025, Community Foundation North East hosted the first-ever North East Roots Homecoming, celebrating the region’s global community and the spirit of generosity that connects people to the North East, wherever they live. The programme brought together people passionate about the region to reconnect and explore how they can help strengthen communities and create opportunities across the North East.

Six months on from receiving a £10,000 grant through the North East Roots Fund, Back on the Map continues to support children and young people facing social and economic barriers through community-led activities, practical support services, and programmes that build confidence and belonging.

For more than two decades, Back on the Map has worked alongside residents in Sunderland’s East End to create sustainable homes, safer neighbourhoods, and stronger community connections.

As part of the North East Roots Homecoming programme, Community Foundation North East partnered with Sunderland Music City during the Music Against Child Poverty 2 concert to provide up to £50,000 in match funding for five grassroots organisations building pathways to opportunity, including Back on the Map.

Homecoming forms part of the wider North East Roots initiative, which encourages people with a connection to the North East to give back and support communities across the region through the North East Roots Fund.

John Hollingsworth, Chief Philanthropy and Development Officer at Community Foundation North East, said:

“North East Roots Homecoming showed the incredible impact people can have when they come together to support the communities that shaped them.

Thanks to donations through the North East Roots Fund, organisations like Back on the Map can continue creating opportunities for local people and responding directly to the challenges their communities face.

“This is exactly what the North East Roots initiative is about — connecting people who care deeply about the region with grassroots organisations making a lasting difference every day.”

Back on the Map has seen growing demand for support for children and young people in Hendon.

Jo Cooper, Chief Executive of Back on the Map, said:

“Unfortunately, many young people in our community tell us they are being held back by a lack of opportunities and support, and struggle to find a pathway into work.

“The North East Roots Fund’s support allows us to take action by giving young people the opportunities, confidence, skills and tools to build a better future.

“This funding is directly contributing to our mission to make Hendon a place of opportunity to live, work and thrive through diversifying our youth service, attracting more participants and engaging more people in our events and services.”
