About The Jarrow March Next Step Fund

In the spirit of the famous Jarrow Crusaders, the Jarrow March Next Step Fund aims to help young people in Jarrow aged 12 – 18 to take control of their own future.

The Fund will give them a helping hand to look for and try out things they might not otherwise get the chance to do before they leave school, by removing the barriers to achieving a fulfilling job by supporting costs to get to and participate in a work experience placement or for specialist tools or tuition.

Jarrow Forward, the government funded Neighbourhood Board, has allocated an initial £125,000, to establish the Fund over five years.

IMPORTANT – Applications MUST be made by the parent or guardian of the young person. If you have any questions about applying please contact Elaine Holdsworth using the details at the bottom of the page

Who does the fund support

The Fund is for young people aged 12 – 18 who live in, or attend school in the Jarrow NE32 postcode area.

What can you apply for

Grants from £200 – £1,000 are available to young people to achieve their dream job by helping them to try out different opportunities and experiences. These could include:

  • Travel and other work experiences
  • Tuition fees / short courses / certifications e.g. DBS checks
  • Visits to work places or other sites related to their ambitions
  • Specialist activity camps
  • Mentoring / coaching sessions
  • Interview or clothing required for the job
  • Tools, starter kits, laptops and study materials or any other essential items that they or an employer may require to remove barriers to finding their goal

Please note we cannot fund things you have already paid for.

What do you need to include

In the application the parent or guardian should work with the young person to ensure they are involved and tell us why they would like this grant.

Areas you could talk about include:

  • Their ambitions for the future
  • The subjects and interests they enjoy
  • Their interests outside school or any interests they would like to try
  • The job they would like to do
  • The careers they hope to pursue or want to try
  • Skills they would like to develop
  • How will the funding remove barriers and support their future

We will also need a supporting statement from someone who is over 18 and not a family member. This can be a teacher, tutor, youth worker, employer, careers advisor, coach or mentor. They will need to outline why they support the young persons application and provide their contact details on the statement.

If the young person is under 18 the bank account will need to be in the name of the parent or guardian submitting the application.
