Last week we travelled to Cazenove Capital’s London offices to share the latest insights from the Third Sector Trends study, the largest study of charities, voluntary organisations and community groups in England and Wales.

Led by Community Foundation North East, the research offers a detailed picture of how the voluntary and community sector is evolving, highlighting both the challenges organisations face and the crucial role they play in communities across the country.

The event featured thought-provoking insights from Professor Tony Chapman, research lead for Third Sector Trends, who shared key findings from the latest data and explored what they reveal about the changing landscape for charities and community organisations.

Reflecting on the importance of the research, Rob Williamson, Chief Executive Officer at Community Foundation North East, said:

“Third Sector Trends provides an invaluable picture of the voluntary and community sector across England and Wales. The research helps us better understand the challenges organisations face, the strengths they bring to their communities, and how funders, policymakers and the sector itself can work together to support their continued impact.”

We also heard reflections from David Holdsworth, Chief Executive of the Charity Commission for England and Wales, who offered a further perspective on what the research means for the future of the sector.

A lively panel discussion followed, bringing together expert voices from across the sector featuring Emma de Closset, Sophie Francis-Cansfield, Geethika Jayatilaka and Joe Prendiville. The discussion highlighted the sector’s resilience and adaptability, with speakers noting how charities often find opportunities even in uncertain environments.

Panellists emphasised that while organisations are accustomed to hoping for the best while planning for the worst, they continue to deliver vital services for our communities. The conversation also recognised that while ambition and capability across the sector are strong, they should not be taken for granted.

The conversation continued over networking, giving attendees the opportunity to reflect on the findings and share experiences from across the sector.

We are grateful to Tom Montagu-Pollock and the team at Cazenove Capital for hosting the event and helping us bring together such a thoughtful and engaged audience.
