Do I have to apply for a grant to each of your funds?

Absolutely not! You make one application and we will make sure it is considered by each of the relevant funds.

What does it cost to set up a fund at the Community Foundation?

A minimum of £50,000 for an endowment fund and £10,000 per year for a flow through (spending annual donation in grants) fund. These donations will usually qualify for tax relief.

Acorn Funds can be set up for £1,000 pa and paid in monthly donations of £65 plus Gift Aid. For more information, visit Set up a Fund.

Aren't the latest tax concessions on gifts of shares too good to be true?

Yes. You can avoid capital gains tax and claim in tax relief on gifts of shares to charity.

Do you have to be a registered charity to apply for a grant?

No. Many small groups, like playgroups, are not registered with the Charity Commission. We will ask to see your accounts and your constitution. But providing the purpose of your grant is charitable, then you are welcome to apply.

Do you cover Durham?

There is a Community Foundation for County Durham. Contact County Durham Foundation

What is your link with the Henry Smith Charity?

The Community Foundation recommends applications from projects in the North East to the Henry Smith Charity. If these projects are supported, we then manage the grants on behalf of the Charity.

The Henry Smith Charity still welcomes applications direct to their London Office.
