Community groups get ready for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

In April this year, Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland along with 43 other community foundations in the UK Community Foundations network were able to distribute over 700 grants totalling £4.58m to community groups throughout England from the Let’s Create Jubilee Fund, on behalf of Arts Council England, the national development agency for creativity and culture. This was made possible thanks to National Lottery players. 

Below are the 18 projects supported by the Community Foundation across Tyne & Wear and Northumberland. All the projects plus many others across the country are all listed on the Queens Platinum Jubilee website here.

1 element_group list Array Age Concern Tyneside South – Crowns and Cuppas

‘Crowns and Cuppas’ is a partnership with Cultural Spring and a local artist to support 70 participants to create a 3ft x 5ft wall hanging commemorating the Queen’s Jubilee.

To commemorate the Queens jubilee there will be two new decorated glass windows, designed, made and installed in Bensham Grove Community Centre which will celebrate the part paid by women of diverse cultures and backgrounds in the development of Bensham Grove.

Chilli Studios have created an accessible area in the shared community garden for a programme of heritage craft events during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations

Churches Together in South Tyneside are working with a local historian, author and photographer to produce a book of memories from the 1950s circa the time of the Queen’s Coronation involving people from the project. They are also running a number of other activities.

The Institute Cambois in collaboration with November Club theatre company are marking the Platinum Jubilee with a range of activities over the weekend 5-6 June kick-starting a year of creative ambition for the area.

Deaf Awareness: NE are celebrating the Platinum Jubilee with an evening of signed singing that will bring together deaf and hearing people

Residents living at The Oaks Care Home and pupils from Malvin’s Close Academy are taking the children’s storybook The Queens Knickers as inspiration for a celebratory piece of theatre. A dance performance with music will be performed in The Oaks Care Home and gardens. The project has been supported by the author Nicholas Allen and Seven Stories; Centre for Children’s Books, who hold an archive of his work.

Using archive photos and films, the Friends of Berwick & District Museum and Archives have created an exhibition of what has happened in Berwick from 1952 to 2022 and royal connections including visits and Jubilee celebrations. This free event will run 4-5 June and will include children’s activities and a display of prints created by local school children.

Grace House North East is hosting a festival to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee, for families with one or more disabled children where they can engage in a range of activities.

Green Croft Arts and delivering a programme of artistic activity to enable the community of Gilsland and surrounding area to celebrate the Queens Platinum Jubilee. This includes a Hadrian’s Wall Beacon Event on 2 June and a tea part on 4 June

Taking inspiration from the Queen as a women of influence, this exhibition tells the stories of 6 women who have influenced Jarrow’s history, taking a closer look at their lives and legacy. You can also find out about The Queen’s visits to South Tyneside, and see a photograph of her and Prince Phillip, signed during the opening of the museum in 2000.

Harlow Green Unites are creating a multi-sensory Platinum Jubilee Garden at Angel Court extra care scheme, Gateshead. Artists, Sculptors and Horticulturalists are working with pupils and staff at Harlow Green Primary school, older people living at Angel Court, relatives and volunteers to create the garden using Jubilee colours and themes. It will provide a welcoming, accessible, and stimulating place for people of all ages, particularly considering people living with Dementia.

Meadow Well Connected in partnership with Cedarwood Trust have been supporting local people to plan and run their own street parties in the week commencing 30th May 2022. They will also be hosting their own street party on 31 May

North Tyneside Disability Forum are opening their gardens, centre and cafe to local people to join them on 4 and 5 June celebrate the Platinum Jubilee. There will be entertainment including song, dance, crafts and arts, photography, music making and more showing local people that disability doesn’t mean inability.

Pendower Good Neighbour House Project be worked with an artist and community members to design and make a series of painted silk batik flags. Seven flags, each depicting a different decade of the 70 years of the Queen’s reign, will be on display outside the centre over the Jubilee weekend.

Throckley Community Hall  are holding a Queens Jubilee weekend for the community of Throckley. They have worked with artists Nicola Lynch and Sally Southern and INSPIREYOUTH Tyne and Wear to change a local bus stop into the Queen Elizabeth Pub where the community will be able to gather, celebrate, socialise with a cup of tea and receive Jubilee Souvenirs. Local people performing, singing, comedy and importantly having fun.
