The North East Charity Awards, which celebrates the best of charities and voluntary groups in the North East, is now open for nominations.
Amongst the twelve categories, one of the most coveted trophies at the awards highlights the importance of philanthropy to the region’s charity sector. The Philanthropy Award recognises generous people based in North East England who support charities through their personal giving and philanthropy. The award is sponsored by the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland and the County Durham Community Foundation.
Last year’s winner was Lyn Shears, who has helped a whole range of organisations over the years. Through funds placed with the Community Foundation, Mrs Shears provides funding for a number of socially-oriented organisations and she takes a personal interest in each one, including community radio station, Lionheart Radio.
Rob Williamson of Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland and Michelle Cooper of County Durham Community Foundation said: “We’re proud to jointly sponsor this award celebrating our region’s philanthropists.
“In November our foundations will be delivering GeNErosity – The Festival of Philanthropy and Giving, celebrating out rich philanthropic heritage and shining a light on the importance of philanthropy now and in the future.
“Philanthropists have made, and continue to make a huge difference to our all lives in this region. We hope this award and the festival will inspire others to work with us to give money or time to local charities who can make a difference in our region.”
