Music fans from across the region are in for a treat this Friday (23 November), with an exclusive chance to get their hands on signed music memorabilia from some of the region’s biggest and best artists, in a special charity auction.
With items such as signed lyrics from Bryan Ferry (Avalon), Jimmy Nail (Big River), Paul Smith and Mike Tickell, as well as an original copy of the lyrics for Gazza and Lindisfarne’s Fog on the Tyne up for grabs, and the lyrics to Brothers in Arms by Mark Knopfler, the charity auction will take place between 6.45pm and 9.30pm, at Newcastle University’s King’s Hall in the historic Armstrong Building.
The auction is just one element of a special musical event, called Avison to Tickell: Musicians as Philanthropists for the North East, as part of Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland and Newcastle University’s GeNErosity Festival. At each event and on social media across the North East people are making a pledge to say how they will be giving their time and money to help others.
The GeNErosity Festival is a series of 50 events, taking place across the North East between Wednesday 7th November and Tuesday 27th November, celebrating and debating the past, present and future of philanthropy and giving across the region, which has helped to shape the North East today.
Sandra King, Chief Philanthropy Officer at Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, said: “Music is such a huge part of our lives but not many people stop to think about how the tunes we hold dear to us actually come to be.
“The North East is a hot-bed of grass-roots musical talent, while also having a rich history in people generously giving their money and time to shape the region today. However recent research shows that lower-income families are half as likely to have a child learning an instrument as more affluent peers, which is why our Young Musicians Fund is a great way of redressing the balance and it’s great that this GeNErosity Festival event is supporting this fund and budding musicians in the region.”
“It’s so important – now more than ever – that we support this talent pipeline through giving our money and time generously, to plug the gaps which the cuts to public funding have left, so that as a region we can continue to enjoy the tunes of our rising musical stars from the North East long into the future.”
As part of the festival line-up, the Avison to Tickell event will be a celebration of the role of philanthropy in preserving and nurturing the music and culture of the North East.
Acclaimed musician and North East native, Kathryn Tickell will guide attendees in the King’s Hall through the evening, bringing to life the joy of giving to ‘The Arts’. From her own tune dedicated to Catherine Cookson, to welcoming household names, to the stars of tomorrow to the stage, it promises to be a very special evening.
Ahead of her performance, Kathryn, said: “We are planning a fantastic evening of music and song to share the strength of our North East culture, something I am hugely passionate about. My young band Superfolkus will be supporting me in showcasing the young talent and enthusiasm we have for music in the region. Martin Longstaff is going to be playing some of his much-loved songs about our region’s heritage and the audience will experience some time travelling, with a new commission for the Kings Hall organ referencing Avison, Shield, Shafto and me!”
“I’m thankful for the support we have had for the event from our North East musicians community who understand the importance of giving back to encourage new talent. The framed lyrics will be popular with music fans.”
All proceeds from the evening including the full ticket price and proceeds from the charity auction will go into the Young Musicians Fund at the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, to help support budding artists and home-grown talent across the region.
