About the David Dockray’s West End Young People’s Fund

David Dockray’s West End Young People’s Fund was established at the Community Foundation for Tyne & Wear and Northumberland in 2007 following the sale of the West End Youth and Community Centre in Fenham which had been built by David Dockray in 1947 for young people in the area.

The former Trustees saw the benefit of setting up an endowment fund, with the proceeds of the sale at the Community Foundation to benefit young people for generations to come.

What will the Fund support?

The Fund supports projects for children and young people (aged five to 25) in the West End of Newcastle. Priority is given to community groups and individuals in the area inside the borders of Silver Lonnen, Stamfordham Road, Central Motorway, Brighton Grove, West Road and back to Silver Lonnen.

Individuals can apply for grants between £750 and £1,500.  Most grants will be ‘one off’ but exceptionally, repeat grants will be considered:

    • To support individual young people who are not able to pursue realistic, achievable dreams and ambitions because of financial difficulties
    • To support gifted and talented young people.

What will not be funded?

  • Sponsorship and fundraising events
  • Endowments, loan repayments or for activities bought or ordered before we make a grant.
  • Grants which will be used to make grants to a third party
  • Political activities
  • Acts of religious worship
  • Work which should be funded from statutory sources – such as school buildings and curriculum resources
  • Work which only benefits animals
