About the William Leech Charity and Leech Challenge Funds

Sir William Leech was a notable North East philanthropist. Through the charitable trust he established, the William Leech Charity, he made gifts to the Community Foundation to inspire more philanthropy in our area.

The Community Foundation has a continuing relationship with the Leech family to this day through the two funds we hold: the William Leech Charity Fund and the Leech Challenge Fund. Together, these funds support work across Tyne & Wear and Northumberland with a focus on volunteering and groups led by volunteers.

What The Leech Funds at Community Foundation will support

Groups can apply for grants of between £5,000 and £10,000 to support activities over a year. In total we expect to award around 10 grants in this round. The aim is to support volunteer and user-led work that statutory bodies do not. Examples of the kind of activities that we want to support include:

  • continuing or expanding existing volunteering schemes, or setting up new ones
  • training, co-ordination and support costs for volunteers.

Application criteria

Applicants must fit the usual Community Foundation criteria and:

  • have an income under £500,000 in the most recently completed financial year
  • be working in less well served parts of our area i.e. Sunderland, South Tyneside, North Tyneside and south-east Northumberland
  • demonstrate there are volunteer or user-led and/or strongly engaged with the communities they serve.

We will prioritise organisations working with people experiencing poverty (including food poverty), people with mental health problems, or people from black, Asian and other minority ethnic communities.

To apply please complete the standard Community Foundation form and clearly mark it for ‘The Leech Funds’.
