Which organisations are eligible to apply?

In order to be eligible you need to meet all the following criteria:  

  • You must be a charity or constituted community organisation based and working in Tyne and Wear (Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland) or Northumberland. By constituted we mean you must have a governing document, a governing body of at least three unrelated individuals and a bank account in the organisation’s name with at least two unrelated signatories.
  • Your organisation must also have adequate safeguarding arrangements in place.
  • Our normal rules on funding Community Interest Companies (CICs) and other non-charitable social enterprises apply. You can find these on our website.

If you do not meet all these eligibility criteria, you should not apply.

If your organisation is already getting a grant from either our Coronavirus Response and Recovery Fund or our National Emergency Trust Coronavirus Appeal Fund, please don’t make an application in response to this call. 

Please note, we will be prioritising funding for organisations with income under £1m, especially smaller organisations with under £0.5m in income.

What activities and costs can be supported?

We are calling for applications from organisations who are providing immediate relief to vulnerable people affected by the Covid-19 crisis. By vulnerable, we mean the elderly (70+) and those with pre-existing health conditions, heart and circulatory problems, lung conditions, cancer and arthritis). We can also support organisations during the crisis who are helping people experiencing hardship, victims of domestic violence or people needing support with mental health issues or bereavement. We are keen to help organisations working with communities who may be disproportionately affected by the outbreak in other ways e.g. because they are already facing prejudice and discrimination or are being poorly served by ‘mainstream’ services.

We want to fund organisations that are responding by continuing or adapting their existing activities. We can fund core costs e.g. salaries, volunteering support and overheads. We can also fund project/capital costs of adapting services, like devices or software to enable remote working. We can also support the costs of provisions for people facing hardship (e.g. foodbanks that need to buy more supplies).

Please note that we can only fund work covered by the purposes set out in your governing document. For example, if it says that your sole purpose is ‘to provide sporting activities for young people’ we could not fund you to distribute food parcels to the elderly.

What won't be funded?

Please do not apply if your request falls under one or more of the following headings.

  • Your organisation is not based and operating in Tyne & Wear or Northumberland.
  • Your organisation or request is not eligible for our funding i.e.
    • activities which are not charitable in law;
    • organisations that do not have adequate safeguarding arrangements;
    • contributions to general appeals or circulars;
    • religious activity which is not for wider public benefit;
    • where the primary benefit is to enable a public body to carry out its statutory obligations;
    • activities where the primary benefit is the advancement of animal welfare;
    • activities which have already taken place;
    • grant making, or equivalent gifts in kind, by other organisations;
    • privately owned and profit-distributing companies or limited partnerships
  • You are an individual or household seeking help. 
  • You are a local authority, state school, NHS trust or other statutory body.
  • You are looking for less than £1,000 or more than £5,000 in funding.

We will have to reject any applications that are incomplete, or where supporting documents are missing, because we don’t have the staff resources to chase information.

How can we apply?

Please check that your organisation and request are eligible for support from our Coronavirus funds before making an application. You’ll also need to make sure you can upload copies of supporting documents if we do not already have them. The standard supporting documents we need from all organisations are your governing document, your most recent financial statements, a copy bank statement less than 3 months old and your safeguarding policy and procedure.

You will need to give us all the information about your organisation on the application even if you have had a grant from us before January 2020.

If you’re already registered on our grant system, you can apply now by clicking here. If you’ve made an application to us this year, most of the information about your organisation will be filled in. Just update any sections you need to and then give us the details about this request.

Use our application notes to help you complete all the sections of the application form. In the section about ‘your request for funding’. Please be clear how your application relates to your organisation’s Coronavirus work and aims of our funds (use question 21 for this).

We are aiming to keep monitoring requirements from our Coronavirus funds relatively light touch. You will need to describe one way you know the work will have been successful in question 28 but keep this simple and easy to feedback on. For example, you might say ‘we will have continued to support older people who use our services by moving our staff and volunteers to remote and teleworking’.

What is the process and timetable for funding decisions?

We will make decisions on a rolling basis over the coming weeks in line with the available funding. If we know your organisation well, we hope to keep assessment relatively light-touch and to tell you whether you have been successful within couple of weeks of receiving your completed application. If you have not applied to us before, or not for some time, we will likely get in touch to find out more about your work and decisions may take longer.

We expect to get a lot of applications, so we will have to be strict about turning down any that do not clearly meet our eligibility rules and fund aims. Our priority will be to support groups we know that are already delivering services to people affected by COVID-19. New initiatives established in response to the current outbreak are encouraged to connect with such organisations, rather than apply to us directly for funding.
