About Our Environmental and Climate intentions

Helping communities look after the environment and respond to climate change.

What is funding available for

The Community Foundation is aiming to allocate £500,000 from its existing portfolio of funds in the 2024/2025 financial year to support organisations in Tyne & Wear and Northumberland to look after and enhance the environment and support the region to rise to the challenge of climate change.

Applicants are advised to read our 2024 Vital Signs report on the environment, as we are willing to consider a broad scope of applications where charitable funding can have a significant impact:

Examples of activities that could be considered for funding include re-wilding programmes, recycling and repurposing projects, raising awareness in communities, and improving the energy efficiency of a building. Projects such as community beautification, for example litter picking as a standalone activity, are not a priority, and we aim to focus on supporting smaller, local charities and community organisations, preferably with an income of up to £1 million.

Applications of £1,000 and over are welcomed through our general online application process; applications must demonstrate clear, positive environmental/climate impact. We would also like to consider proposals with wider and/or longer-term impacts, including multi-year initiatives, for which more than £10,000 may be required. If you are developing an application, please contact either Ross Wilson or Pete Barrett in the first instance.

We will not consider applications unless we have discussed it with you prior to submission, please contact Pete Barrett or Ross Wilson.

If you have a suitable proposal, please submit an application through our ‘Calls for applications’ on the grantee portal by applying here and we will seek to allocate it to the appropriate fund.
