The North East Philanthropy story is over 800 years in the making, dating back to the Middle Ages where notable local philanthropists such as Bishop Hugh du Puiset (1125-1195) helped to build and endow churches, monasteries, schools, housing, roads and bridges, and provide relief for the poor, sick and aged.

An interactive map is now available with over 100 biographies of notable philanthropists from the middle ages to modern day. Academic essays on understanding philanthropy (available now!) and the history of philanthropy in the region will also be made available to help you find out more about how philanthropy has helped to inspire our region.

This huge body of research was conducted by the Newcastle University Centre for Research on Entrepreneurship, Wealth and Philanthropy.
