A new Giving Network for the next generation of North East philanthropists, created by the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear & Northumberland and supported by law firm Ward Hadaway, has generated over £10,000 in its first year for local charities.
The Giving Network brings together young professionals who donate at least £30 a month for local causes. Donations are matched pound for pound by the Community Foundation and increased by Gift Aid meaning over £10,000 has been raised collectively. These funds are now due to be distributed among four local charities addressing poverty, mental health and inclusion, all areas identified by the Community Foundation from its research as priorities for support. The four charities are:
- Apna Ghar – a charity in South Tyneside working with women from black, Asian and minority ethnic communities
- Cedarwood Trust, a community hub on the Meadow Well Estate in North Tyneside
- Gateshead Older People’s Assembly, and
- Washington Mind, which supports people with mental ill-health
At an event in May, Giving Network members will hear from the people behind the four projects and choose how they would like to allocate their portion of the collective pot. Beforehand, all four charities will receive free training on pitching and presenting courtesy of the Community Foundation.
The Giving Network has 21 members so far, meaning the Community Foundation is well on its way to its goal of bringing together 30 professionals to lead the next generation of philanthropists.

Charlotte Thornton is one of the members of The Giving Network:
“I am so pleased to be part of The Giving Network and £30 feels like a manageable donation to make on a monthly basis. Working with the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland means I know that the money is in safe hands but also that the money will go where it will have the most impact on the issues people are facing in the region. I thoroughly recommend joining and feeling really connected to the people most in need in the local community”
Rob Williamson, Chief Executive of the Community Foundation, said:
“Philanthropy is about giving money, time and resource to help others. We know a lot about the region’s major philanthropists – both past and present – and how they’ve made the North East a special place to live and work. Through The Giving Network we want to inspire the next generation and demonstrate how easy it is to make a real difference to communities in our region.”
Jamie Martin, Senior Partner at Ward Hadaway, which is supporting the Network, said:
“We have been giving to the community for 30 years and are delighted to support the Community Foundation’s Giving Network to encourage young professionals to support their local causes.
“As an organisation of more than 500 people across Newcastle, Leeds and Manchester, we are committed to making a difference in the communities where we all live and work. We have our own fund in the Community Foundation and also contribute to The Women’s Fund. We are particularly pleased to be involved in this initiative with the Community Foundation in what is the 30th Anniversary year of both organisations.”
