Disabled bowlers in Houghton take to the greens following a donation of £10,200 from funds at the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland.

Ivy Wilson, a former women’s bowling champion has been bowling for 37 years but sadly had to give up her hobby when health complications with septicaemia resulted in the loss of fingers and toes. Thanks to the purchase of ten specially adapted wheelchairs, Houghton Town Bowls Club is now able to help people with disabilities take part in a fun team sport and compete in regional competitions.

Ivy said: “I think the wheelchair will make a difference because I need exercise. I joined the club in 1980 and I’m the longest serving lady member of this club but had to stop due to my health. I enjoy bowling, and I can’t wait to start playing next season and hopefully win some more trophies for the club.”

Colin Smith, Managing Director of Production Division at Ringtons said:

“My great grandfather founded the business in 1907 and he was known as a renowned philanthropist. We’re proud to continue this tradition with support from the Community Foundation and give back to the area in which we work.”

“Houghton Town Bowls is a wonderful project, which is helping disabled people take part in a healthy and active team sport. The Ringtons Fund is our way of giving back to the area in which our business has grown, and with advice from the Community Foundation we can ensure that money is invested securely into the heart of our community.”

Sandra King, Chief Philanthropy Officer at the Community Foundation, said: “We’re delighted to help our donors such as Ringtons, Northumbrian Water and the Prime family by ensuring that their money can go further to help projects on their doorstep, strengthen communities, improve lives and enable local people to realise their potential.

“As the largest and one of the most experienced community foundations in the UK, we use our knowledge and insight to help identify where giving and support will have the greatest impact in the North East.”

Starting with where you are and the causes that inspire you, the Community Foundation works with companies and individuals to create sustainable community funds to support local projects now and in the future. The Community Foundation offers a range of options allowing people to give when, when and how they choose. From starting a new fund, to collective giving with others who share your interests; from leaving a legacy in your will to donating right now.
