People with physical and learning disabilities are benefiting from opportunities to experience a specially adapted powerboat through funding from the Community Foundation for South Shields Sea Cadets, TS Collingwood.
The Sea Cadet unit is the only one in the country that has a fully accessible boat, the Wheelyboat Mk IV, that can take three wheelchairs and allow users to drive the boat from the helm. As well as providing the chance for all cadets to learn how to be on the water, the unit is also making links with other disability organisations so that they can benefit from the new asset. All cadets, regardless of disability, are now able to enjoy training on equal terms and for the first time also take a Royal Yacht Association Level II qualification.
