An internationally renowned folk musician has established an endowment fund at the Community Foundation to support North East musical traditions.
Alistair Anderson, an English concertina player, Northumbrian piper and composer of new music rooted in the folk tradition, is one of the founding donors to the NE Endowment for Musical Traditions at the Community Foundation, alongside his wife Liz. For many years, Alistair has been active in introducing people to traditional folk music, song and dance – both keeping the tradition alive and providing the opportunity for people to take part and learn more about the music and its heritage.
Alistair and Liz established the Fund at the Community Foundation to ensure their life-long commitment to playing traditional music, particularly the music of Northumberland, could continue to be enjoyed by future generations of adults and youngsters alike. Part of their commitment is a legacy gift, to include Alistair’s instruments, that will substantially grow the fund so that it can award more and larger grants in the future.
The new fund, which is already providing grants, supports activities that encourage engagement with traditional folk music, song and dance in the North East of England. As an endowment at the Community Foundation, the fund will exist in perpetuity and enable a range of community and voluntary groups to provide learning opportunities as well as supporting young people who need bursaries to be able to fully participate in traditional music, song or dance, for generations to come.
The Community Foundation is keen to identify other like-minded folk enthusiasts who are interested in making a contribution to the fund either during their lifetime or as part of a legacy to ensure that North East musical traditions can thrive.
