The Community Foundation has invited bids from the Newcastle cultural sector for projects which improve the physical, mental and social health of the city.

It will match funds raised for #CrowdfundNewcastleCulture projects on the crowdfunder.co.uk website, pledging £1 for every pound donated by the public.

Successful projects so far have included a crowdfund campaign for Newcastle Puppetry Festival, which raised more than £4k for free children’s activities including a day at Ouseburn Farm, a campaign by Tyneside Cinema which raised more than £4k to help visually impaired or hard of hearing visitors, and £7k for regular live music sessions to soothe very ill babies and children at the Children’s Heart Unit and Freeman Hospital.

The Community Foundation’s Ellie Turner said: “The campaigns are a fantastic showcase of the vital role culture has in improving the health and wellbeing of Newcastle residents.

“We provide advice and support to all campaigns on the platform.

“What I hear from all the projects is that the benefits of running a campaign are far beyond the money, developing new messaging and gaining new supporters.”

The current ‘Take a Seat’ campaign by Dance City to update the old fashioned and uncomfortable seating and improve access for wheelchair users is nearing its £10,000 target.

Rewards for supporters range from limited edition Dance City goodies to joining the commission panel as an observer and a sit-down dinner with the Artistic Director, Anthony Baker.

The #CrowdfundNewcastleCulture platform is managed by Community Foundation in partnership with Newcastle City Council as part of the Newcastle Culture Investment Fund

#CrowdfundNewcastleCulture adds half of the funding required to campaigns which address the council’s aims around health, wellbeing and social care.

To be eligible, the campaign must be run by an arts organisation based in Newcastle which will use arts and culture to improve the health of its residents.

To date, £78,627 has been raised by projects in Newcastle. With £40,000 of that coming from the public.

This money has been made available through a grants programme partnership between Newcastle City Council and the Community Foundation.
