Work to improve employees’ health is recognised with award

The Community Foundation has been recognised for helping to improve health in the workplace with a bronze level Better Health at Work award.

The awards scheme recognises the efforts of employers in the North East and Cumbria in addressing health issues within the workplace. The award scheme is free, flexible and open to all employers in the North East and Cumbria, regardless of size, location or type of business.

To achieve bronze status, the Foundation held a number of health and wellness initiatives:

Alcohol and Drug Awareness

1. Dry January and Alcohol Awareness Week

Healthy Eating and Weight Management

1. Hydration challenge month

2. Sugar free week/Wellness month

3. Eat Well information on notice board

Physical Activity

1. Walking month

2. Running group

3. Gardening group

4. Stretch & Relaxation Class

5. Move O’clock

Stress and Mental Health

1. Labyrinth session

2. Wellbeing and mental health awareness session

Cancer

1. Alcohol Awareness

Health Checks

Musculoskeletal (MSK)

2.    Desk assessment

There are 4 levels to the Better Health at Work Awards scheme –Bronze, Silver, Gold and Continuing Excellence. Organisations are given up to a year per level, and having secured Bronze in Year One, the Community Foundation will now be aiming towards its silver status in 2019-20.

Lisa Cappleman, a Better Health at Work advocate at the Community Foundation added:
“There are many benefits to a healthier workforce. From a work-perspective it can help to reduce sickness and the potential work-related injuries, and on a personal level it can improve happiness and mental well-being.

“We’re proud of our team’s efforts in 2018, and we look forward to building on this to achieve our silver status in 2019.”

The Better Health at Work Award is a partnership between the Northern TUC, the 12 local authorities in the region and the NHS. It is also supported by Public Health England.
