Earlier this year Sunderland musician Eve Cole won the Alan Hull Award from the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland. Now, thanks to the award she’s launching her first official release.
Eve was the third Sunderland based musician to win the prestigious award and the second in a row to be part of Sunderland’s Young Musicians Project. Announcing the news of the official release, Eve talked about the difference the Alan Hull Award has made as well other exciting developments.
“On Thursday May 5th, 2022. I will be releasing my first single “Nice Guy Syndrome” on all streaming platforms. Winning the Alan Hull Award has given me the confidence and ability to reach out to other local artists, asking for advice and collaborating in order to help me create the best possible quality of release. I spoke to local musicians Labrynthine Oceans about how to use DistroKid as a distributor, and used the generosity of the Alan Hull Award Grant to purchase DistroKid.
Through Nick Roberts’ Instagram, I heard about the BBC Live Lounge introducing competition, and decided to submit Nice Guy Syndrome as an entry, and it was shortlisted! I also had the honour of meeting and thanking Ray Laidlaw of Lindisfarne at their 50th anniversary show in Durham. I feel that the Alan Hull Award has given me so many connections and opportunities to further my reach in my music, and the progress I have already experienced is something I am so grateful for.”
Eve worked with David Brewis from Field Music to record the single. David said
“I feel so lucky to have had the chance to watch Eve develop as a songwriter and to have worked with her a little bit. The thing which really sticks out to me about Eve’s writing is that she doesn’t just attach words to a set of chords – with her, every song has a complete concept, and she’s able to spin out these musical scenarios in a completely believable way. I feel that’s pretty rare among songwriters in general but incredible to see in someone so young. Helping her to record Nice Guy Syndrome was such a pleasure and I’m over the moon it’s out there for the general public to enjoy.”

Jo Cundall, Senior Advisor, Culture at the Community Foundation who oversees the Alan Hull award, explained about the award.
“This fund makes a real difference to the lives of aspiring musicians across the North East. I am thrilled that this latest award to Eve has enabled her to deliver her first official release just a few months after winning and enable her to work with David”.
