News and Events from Community Foundation - 24 November 2008 AGM Special

And the winner is...

Winner of Voluntary Sector Entrepreneur of the Year - Anthony Woods-Waters

Anthony Woods-Waters from Building Futures East was announced as the Ward Hadaway Voluntary Sector Entrepreneur of the Year at the Community Foundation's AGM last Thursday.

He was chosen because he demonstrated the hallmarks of all great entrepreneurs; vision and passion coupled with sheer determination that his organisation provides the best service possible.

Jamie Martin from Ward Hadaway said:

"Anthony was a very worthy winner of the Voluntary Sector Entrepreneur Award, and I must commend all of the other shortlisted candidates. It is becoming increasingly important that we recognise the work of individuals and organisations that are striving to improve our communities and give people opportunities that they might not otherwise have had."

We would also like to congratulate all of the other shortlisted candidates on the excellent work they are doing in their communities and we look forward to lending them our support in the future.

They included:

Jo Grant - who is doing excellent work for Aquila Way with homeless people in Gateshead and Newcastle, gaining them a national reputation for the quality of service they provide.

Paul Lancaster - who is continuing to develop a valuable web based resource for the voluntary sector through PNE Group whilst also making the project sustainable.

Dorothy Craw - from Recyke Y' Bike who is ensuring hundreds of old bikes don't go to landfill and are repaired so that they can be sold on to new owners or sent to health agencies in Africa.

Liz Prudhoe - from ADAPT who has turned the organisation, which provides community transport for disabled and older people in Northumberland, around from being 90% dependant on grant funding to 90% sustainable.

Dame Julia Cleverdon also delivered a highly engaging keynote speech about the importance of corporate social responsibility for businesses during turbulent financial times as well as the importance of businesses connecting with communities and becoming engaged with them in a productive way.

Commenting on her speech Richard Maudslay Deputy Chair of the Community Foundation said:

"Julia has made an important point in reminding us of the importance of organisations developing a sense of place and the challenge of getting organisations to recognise that.  She also reaffirmed that that there is hope for the future despite the current economic climate."

A transcript of her speech will be available on our website soon.

Robson's Foundation Benefits from Legacy Fund

John Sands and his Grandaughter Bethany with Sir Bobby Robson.

A donation of £2,500 has been made towards the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trial and Research Centre being built at the Freeman Hospital.

The cheque was handed over in a special presentation ceremony in the Sir Bobby Robson Suite at St James's Park just before the Newcastle v Wigan match last week.

John Sands, Board Member for the Community Foundation said:

"We are just so impressed with what Sir Bobby has done to raise money for cancer that we wanted to help him meet his £1m target."

The donation was made possible by the C H Wood Fund which was a legacy left to the Community Foundation by Cyril Henry Wood in 2006 and funds research into conditions such as stroke, cancer and heart disease.
