Who can apply?
Applications are welcomed from voluntary organisations and charities that are based in, or work in, the borough of Gateshead who have not had a grant from this fund in the last twelve months.

What can be funded?
In general, the Community Foundation funds activity that helps people overcome
disadvantage, creates stronger communities, and makes our area a good place to live.
Specific priorities for this fund are:

  • Helping people overcome disadvantage;
  • Mitigating the impact of welfare reform;
  • Tackling financial exclusion;
  • Tackling digital exclusion;
  • Addressing issues around fuel and food poverty;
  • Building the resilience of individuals;
  • Improving the health and well-being of young people;
  • Improving the health and well-being of older people.

Creating stronger communities

  • Supporting community groups who are undertaking an asset transfer;
  • Raising awareness of, preventing and responding to hate crime.

Making Gateshead a better place to live

  • Actively promoting volunteering as a way to bring people together and deliver services.

In all cases at least one-third of people supported by the projects/organisations that we fund must be tenants of The Gateshead Housing Company. This should be clearly stated in the application.

As well as general Community Foundation criteria, the following guidelines apply:

  • Grants will not be awarded to replace any local authority funding, however grants can be awarded to improve a local authority-owned venue over and above what the local authority will do;
  • Grants will not be awarded for on-going running costs or projects that are likely to require on-going support;
  • Applicants need to assure us of ownership and maintenance of a project once it has been completed (i.e. - a garden or play area);
  • Groups can receive no more than one grant from this fund in any twelve month period;
  • Exclusions include grass maintenance equipment and sports kits for teams and clubs;
  • Match funding – we would prefer groups to raise some of the funding themselves. Conditional grants can be awarded with payment released once group provide evidence that match funding has been secured.
