The Sir Tom Cowie Fund at the Community Foundation aims to give disadvantaged and disabled children and young people in Sunderland opportunities to fulfil their potential. The focus is on schemes which help young people achieve goals, improve skills and explore their talents. Sir Tom’s motivation in establishing the Fund was his recognition that not all young people had the same life chances, but that through engaging with voluntary and community projects, they could be helped to overcome barriers and succeed in life.
There is now a call for applications to the Fund to support work with children and young people in the Sunderland local authority area only. Voluntary and community organisations applying may be based in Sunderland itself or neighbouring South Tyneside. To be eligible, groups must have an annual income of not less than £50,000 and not more than £500,000 in the most recently completed financial year.
Groups can apply for grants of between £10,000 and £15,000 to support activities over a year that work with young people in the ways described above. Applications for amounts outside this range will not be considered. Children and young people benefitting may be aged between 8 to 25 years.
The preference with grants from this Fund is to support an activity in full, or to make a major contribution towards the full costs. Applications where a grant from the Sir Tom Cowie Fund would only be a small part of a bigger scheme are unlikely to be supported. Previous recipients of grants from the Fund may reapply, so long as previously funded work has been completed and reported on satisfactorily.
In making grant decisions, we will seek to prioritise organisations working in less well served parts of the area or with less well supported beneficiary groups.
To apply please complete the standard Community Foundation form and clearly mark it for ‘The Sir Tom Cowie Fund’.
The closing date for applications is 12 noon on Monday 19 February 2018. Decisions will be made by the end of March 2018 and awards in early April.
