Your Giving Options

At the Community Foundation there is a giving option for everyone

Set up a fund for your philanthropy

A named fund allows you to give in a straightforward, meaningful and rewarding way that suits your wishes and means. It is like having a charitable trust but without the administrative and regulatory burdens. You benefit from our community knowledge and philanthropy advice and, if you wish, the opportunity to meet like-minded others. A fund can be totally anonymous, or you can set it up in the name of your family, business or charity. If you keep growing a fund, you can also nominate successors to work with us when you are no longer able or willing to be involved.

There are three main choices to make when setting up a named fund, and we can advise on which options will best suit your wishes and means.

Do you want a fund to be forever or for now?

If it’s forever, set up an endowment fund: we invest your gift as capital, with the return used to support charitable activities every year in perpetuity. If it’s for now, set up an annual fund: we apply your gift as revenue to support charitable activities in the year ahead. We can also look to combine elements of an endowment and annual fund for you.

Do you want to help specific causes in an area or be flexible?

You can specify the charities, causes or communities you want to benefit, or you can be open to a wide range. In all cases, we will research and match suitable requests for support to a fund.

Do you want to be hands on or arm’s length?

You can recommend which matching requests should get funded, or you can ask our Board of trustees to select them in line with your wishes. Alternatively, you can allow the trustees complete discretion to fund the things that most need support at any time.

Our menu of fund types to match your choices is below. All funds contribute to the charitable costs of our philanthropy, funding and leadership work, meaning we can continue growing to serve the needs of our communities even better in future. To be effective, we ask for a larger minimum gift and a for a greater annual cost contribution if you choose to be hands on or support more specific causes. Contributions are also tiered, so the more you grow a fund, the lower the overall rate.

• You give our Board of trustees full discretion over what causes to support.
• Endowment fund: minimum £10,000; starting contribution 1% of capital value.
• Annual fund: minimum £5,000; starting contribution 7.5% of annual gift.
• You specify causes or communities, but give our Board of trustees discretion to select the best matching requests for support from the fund.
• Endowment fund: minimum £25,000; starting contribution 1.25% of capital value.
• Annual fund: minimum £10,000; starting contribution 10% of annual gift.
• You specify causes or communities and recommend to our Board of trustees which matching requests you want the fund to support.
• Endowment fund: minimum £50,000; starting contribution 1.35% of capital value.
• Annual fund: minimum £30,000; starting contribution 12% of annual gift.
• You specify the causes or communities and nominate a panel to recommend to our Board of trustees which matching requests the fund should support.
• Endowment fund: minimum £50,000; starting contribution 1.5% of capital value
• Annual fund: minimum £30,000; starting contribution 15% of annual gift
• You specify a number of specific charities for the fund to support each year, subject to our checking that they meet financial and regulatory requirements.
• Endowment fund: minimum £25,000; starting contribution 1.35% of capital value
• Annual fund: minimum £20,000; starting contribution 10% of annual gift
• You set up the fund to benefit one specific charity in perpetuity.
• Endowment fund: minimum £100,000; starting contribution 1% of capital value.

Give with others to support people, places, priorities or passions

You, your business or your charity can make a one-off or regular donation of any amount to one of our theme or affinity funds. Your gift will be pooled with those who share the same interests. You get feedback about how you are helping and in some cases the chance to meet up with those who are supporting the same cause.

Give your time and expertise

Many people, businesses and charities want to give in ways other than through money. As well as named and theme funds, we run projects for those who wish to give time and expertise.

There are lots of ways to give back to your community through volunteering. We can advise on other routes if our projects do not meet your wishes or the time you have available.

Sponsor our events or activities

An important part of our philanthropy, funding and leadership work is done through events, activities and publications  that engage high-net-worth individuals and leaders from business, the public sector and civil society. Sponsorship towards the costs of these activities means they can be of excellent quality while assuring our donors and grant recipients that our charitable funds are being used directly to benefit local communities.
