Community leadership

The Community Foundation plays a leadership role for our communities by gathering and sharing knowledge, collaborating on projects and supporting the charitable sector in ways other than through grants. We also seek to inform and influence ideas and practice in the fields of philanthropy and funding in which we work.

Currently our leadership work is focused on the following.

  • Culture Partnerships – building private giving and support for arts and culture activity across the North East in the form of time, skills and funding.
  • Funder partnerships – aiming to bring additional resources to the region by working with regional and national funders and building their links to our communities.
  • Local Environmental Action Fund (LEAF)– supporting communities to tackle environmental issues in their area through a grant-making collaboration with the Shears Foundation, Greggs Foundation and individual and corporate donors.
  • Third Sector Trends Study – a major research project on the charity sector, a legacy of the Northern Rock Foundation, latterly co-financed by the Community Foundation.
  • Time to Talk – we run regular Time to Talk discussions from our base in Gosforth, and at roadshows around Tyne & Wear and Northumberland. Together we can share thoughts, ideas, good practice, and help others understand more about funding opportunities in our region.
  • Vital Signs – our ‘healthcheck’ reports on challenges and opportunities for communities in Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, and how community philanthropy can help.
