In 2015 the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland invested £12,176 of its Vital Funds in South Tyneside TEN. The charity used the funds to work primarily with a group of 10 young mums from a local children’s centre, developing a 10 week accredited training programme with NVQ certification. The course was delivered in the children’s centre.

An independent evaluation of the project suggested it had helped the women take a significant step towards their goal of finding employment in the hospitality industry. One of the participants, Angeline, agreed:

“There is nothing around here,” she said “you need to go out of here to get work, so you need qualifications and this course gives us those, like the Level Two in Health and Safety, it helps you.”
