Grants from the Platten Family Fund at the Community Foundation are all about supporting young people to consider – and be ready for – careers in engineering and other science and technology-based professions. And children from two Blyth primary schools have now had a unique opportunity to build and race their own electric cars thanks to the Fund.
Newsham Primary School and Morpeth Road Primary School, part of the Blyth Quays Trust, each received £1,250 from the Platten Family Fund to buy a Greenpower Goblin2 electric powered race car. As part of Blyth Science Week, they set up a factory at the Port of Blyth and spent two days learning, designing, building, testing and driving.
A team of volunteers from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (Tyne Tees Automobile Division) helped with key concepts such as friction, forces, materials, gears, and electricity generation before embarking on the building and – most excitingly – the driving.
Tony Platten was also on hand for the full two days to help out and see the results of his philanthropy in action. He established the Platten Family Fund in 2014 and continues to be actively involved. Tony brings all his experience to bear on what makes a ‘good grant’, and has a key focus on inspiring children at the youngest possible age.
