Expression of Interest for a grant to purchase a Multi Use Games Area

The Readman Family Grassroots Fund at the Community Foundation is intending to make at least three grants of up to £20,000 each to Sported members for a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA). The grants will be expected to cover the purchase and siting of a suitably sized MUGA, any costs required to level the ground, associated costs (i.e. insurance / security) and a budget for sporting equipment to be used on the site.

The intention is that the MUGAs will be available to young people to encourage them to engage in healthy pursuits and to offer a distraction from boredom and anti-social behaviour. In addition, they will enhance the community and strengthen the capacity of the group. Sported members should have a strong volunteer force working alongside any salaried staff and will need to demonstrate how they will make the MUGAs accessible to young people in areas of disadvantage.

Groups must be able to confirm that they have permission to site a MUGA and/or a lease on the area where it will be placed for a minimum of 10 years. The Community Foundation will consider applications from Sported groups working in partnership with other organisations who are landowners on condition that there is a formal agreement regarding access and long-term ownership of the asset.

Expression of Interest:

The Expression of Interest should be on no more than one side of A4 (using a 12 point font). It should include:

  • Confirmation that your group is based in Tyne & Wear or Northumberland.
  • a description of your group: your governance structure; staffing level; a summary of what you do; and your income and expenditure for 2016/17.
  • a proposal of how a MUGA would be used, how you will make it easily and regularly accessible to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, and the number of people you would expect to benefit from the facility.
  • whether you will be required to seek permission to site the MUGA and from whom.
  • confirmation that you have undertaken preliminary research to be confident that you could put together a budget within the maximum grant size available.
  • confirmation that you expect to be able to purchase the MUGA within six months of the grant if it is awarded at the end of March 2018.

The Expression of Interest should be sent to Sue Martin by noon on 2 February 2018. sm@communityfoundation.org.uk

Between six and eight groups will be asked to complete a Community Foundation application form. Groups going through to this stage will be contacted by 7 February with a deadline for 19 February to apply. Sported can offer Light Touch support if required.

If you have not heard from the Community Foundation by 8 February your Expression of Interest has not been prioritised for the next round.
