Applying for a Grant - FAQ
How much can I apply for?
Most of our grants are £5,000 or under. We do manage a couple of Funds that make larger awards such as the Henry Smith Charity. If you wish to apply for a larger grant of over £7,000, please contact our Grants Team to discuss your application first.
When can I apply?
At any time.
How long does it take for a decision?
It can take up to three months for a decision.
Can you help me fill in the form?
Our Application Guidelines will help you fill in the form. We also work with a number of local organisations who can give you more specific Advice and Support.
Do you have to be a registered Charity?
You do not have to be a registered charity but the purpose of your grant must be charitable. We like to see evidence of good management such as a written constitution or set of rules, at least three people on a management committee and two signatories for cheques.
Can I apply to more than one Fund?
There is no need to send in more than one application for the same project. Make one application and we will make sure it is considered by each of the relevant Funds.
What is your link with the Henry Smith Charity?
The Community Foundation recommends applications from projects in the North East to the Henry Smith Charity. If these projects are supported, we then manage the grants on behalf of the Charity.
The Henry Smith Charity still welcomes applications direct to their London Office.
Can I apply more than once?
Yes. However, if you have had a grant from the Community Foundation and have not returned your feedback form, then please do so now. We need to know how your previous grant was spent before was can look at a further application.

Can I apply for two grants at the same time?
It is possible to apply for two separate projects or activities at the same time. We advise you to talk to us or seek Advice and Support from your local funding advisor before submitting more than one application.
Do you make grants to individuals?
This is a small part of our grant making and the following Funds make grants to individuals and several of them have separate application forms. Please click on the Funds below to find out more information.
