Recent grant-making has benefitted a wide range of groups in the area; from the restoration of three stained glass windows at St Michael’s Church in the parish of Wark, to a playground development project in Bellingham. Barrasford Scout Group received a grant of £3,000 to develop a poly tunnel which will allow the group to deliver agricultural lessons.

The group is using the grant to launch a new community project that will use gardening equipment to plant flowers, and grow fruit and vegetables in a poly tunnel. The produce will be sold in the community to raise further funds for the group. Members will learn gardening skills, which they will use to help older residents in the community to maintain their gardens.

Victoria Binovec of Barrasford Scout Group said:

“The grant of £3,000 from the Community Foundation has allowed us to purchase gardening equipment and plants. We are teaching our scouts gardening skills to help older residents maintain their allotments, and with our own poly tunnel we can grow nutritional foods and sell produce to the local community.”

Karen Daglish, Fund Development Manager at the Community Foundation added:

“The EDF Energy Green Rigg Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund aims to help local communities by offering funding for a broad range of activities. We are delighted to support the Barrasford Scout Group. The grant will not only create a sustainable gardening project to increase revenue for the scouts, but will create stronger communities by allowing young people to assist older people to maintain their gardens.

Funding is still available to support a wide range of activities that will benefit community and voluntary groups, schools or other such organisations within a 10-mile radius of the Green Rigg wind farm. The current funding window closes on 31May 2014, but the Fund will be open for new applications in August 2014. For more information please visit www.communityfoundation.org.uk/apply
